Canada is the world’s largest exporter of timber, pulp, and
newsprint. Almost half of its vast land area is covered by forests, of which 65% are classed as productive. Canada's forests sustain the economies of hundreds of communities across the country. In 2000, the forest sector employed about 840,000 Canadians, which translates into 1 job in 17 in Canada.

renowned for its high-quality wood-based products, but also for its
advanced forestry technologies and services.

2001 exports of forest products fell by 7,5% reflecting, in part, declines
in the export of lumber in the face of antidumping and countervailing
duties imposed by the United States.

Canada
is becoming a world leader in sustainable forest management.
The Canadian Forest Service (CFS) of Natural Resources Canada has,
for the last century, provided the Canadian forest sector with
leading-edge forest science and expertise. The CFS has a long
tradition of excellence in scientific research. Science and
technology initiatives focus on two key areas: understanding forest
ecosystems and developing strategies for advancing sustainable
forest management.
